CWW Presents, a performance series with an aim to serve as a fertile ground for celebrating creative writing, music and art by and for diverse voices, will provide a thoughtfully curated, collaborative performance every other month. We hope to challenge the status quo while celebrating some of the finest representations of art from Massachusetts-based artists.
The Cambridge Writers’ Workshop, in partnership with Fawn, is excited to launch this dynamic performance series. The premiere of the series will feature performances from Boston-based artists such as Neil Sanzgiri, Audrey Harrer, Janaka Stucky and Fawn (Anne Malin Ringwalt and Will Johnson). Neil Sanzgiri is an artist, writer and musician working to understand how systems of oppression are informed by memory and cultural identity. Sanzgiri’s work poetically examines interpretations of historical events and their effect on current, complex networks of interaction, such as globalization and mass media. Graduating from the Maryland Institute College of Art with a degree in Interdisciplinary Sculpture, Sanzgiri continued to work and live in Baltimore and co-ran the artist run gallery and performance space know as Open Space for five years. Sanzgiri also co-ran the Spiral Cinema migrating film series that ranged from screenings and lectures to panels and publications. Since then, his work has charted the Baltimore Uprising and its connection with the larger social justice movements in the US.
Audrey Harrer is an alt-chamber composer/vocalist/harpist who explores sound, language, and aesthetic in relationship to meaning. Her music is an eccentric blend of nostalgic vocals, cinematic imagery, and playful dissonance. Audrey looks for clever ways to connect lyric and gesture and is particularly interested in the space where music and drama collide.
Janaka Stucky is an American poet, performer, and publisher. The founding editor of Black Ocean, as well as the annual poetry journal, Handsome, he is also the author of a few poetry collections. His poems have appeared in such journals as Denver Quarterly, Fence and North American Review, and his articles have been published by The Huffington Post and The Poetry Foundation. He is a two-time National Haiku Champion and in 2010 he was voted “Boston’s Best Poet” in The Boston Phoenix.
In 2015, Jack White’s Third Man Records launched a new publishing imprint, Third Man Books, and chose Janaka’s full-length poetry collection, The Truth Is We Are Perfect, as their inaugural title. Janaka’s poems are at once incantatory, mystic, and epigrammatic. His esoteric & occult influences, combined with a mesmeric approach to performance, create an almost ecstatic presence on stage.
Fawn is Will Johnson and Anne Malin Ringwalt, two former solo musicians who, after five years of collaborating with each other, decided to give themselves a dedicated space for their music to grow together. Combining elements of banjo, guitar, ukulele, synth and poetry, the two aim to explore the often-ignored spaces between pre-established genres. Fawn’s debut EP, “Neither Dog Nor Car,” was released on November 5, 2016, and their first music video, for “Good Earth,” will premiere in the new year.
